Jab Tak Hai Jaan-Roller Coaster Ride of Emotions

कब तक होश संभाले कोई, होश उड़े तो उड़ जाने दो।
दिल कब सीधी राह चला है, राह मुड़े तो मुद जाने दो।।
Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) can be summed up in these two lines and ironically life too. We humans try too hard to apply logic in our routine life, relations, and emotions rather than allowing our heart to take decisions; we try to control our heart rather than allowing it to control us.

Yash Chopra was not only a conventional film maker but he was an efficient story teller also with a touch of extreme emotions; in Dhool Ka Phool, he portrayed story of illegitimate Muslim child with different shades of love…in Dharamputra, he reversed the theme. Daag, Silsila, Lamhe, Darr, and Veer-Zaara are examples of epic romance which provides futuristic vision of romance for the generation when those movies were released. JTHJ is also a cult romance epic which gives us vision of love in coming years. As it is said in the movie, the romance portrayed in the movie is not as usual as we have in our instant makeup and instant breakup generation.
Yash Chopra has taught the world how to love and what the romance is, from the 1st film to his last film. His strong belief in love has been intact even in JTHJ which can be described as a perfect romantic outing. It’s not just about outstanding acting when I think about this movie; it’s the peak of emotions, extreme pain in eyes, relentless belief in “old school” love, breathtaking cinematography, incredible background score, gripping soundtracks, mesmerizing lyrics, and mind boggling twist and turns in the script. Even as a movie buff, I couldn’t predict some twists and my prediction of next moves were incorrect at vital situation in the story and that’s where script wins and as a romantic movie lover I get a surprise element and not just a usual love story and hence I can say it was a cult romantic epic from a King of Romance (Yash Chopra) behind the camera and in front of camera (SRK). Hardcore romantic movie lovers will understand the complexity of love story and will be able to map their own life with the moment captured in the movie.

Generation from 80’s and 90’s will be able to identify and relive the moments of the movie as if they are their own romance fantasies and today’s generation will surely get a direction where they are heading of and where they need to go when it comes to emotions and relations part. It gives you the feel of “Best of Both World” and how typical old school romance is still having its place in human hearts and it’s in demand; rather I would say it is necessary in this instant makeup breakup world of romance. It not only makes life enjoyable but strengthens the belief in real romance and love also.

There are plots and subplots in the story which are thankfully interwoven with delicacy. Samar, Meera, and Akira look real and people with whom you can relate to. Brilliance of SRK in his Genre is visible; beard look of his in his introduction scene is greeted with love and affection. He has stamped his authority in romantic movies yet again and has proved that there is no other man in the world can love a woman the way he portrays.

The way he articulates the line, “हर इश्क़ का अपना वक़्त होता है...वो वक़्त हमारा नही था...मगर इसका मतलब ये नही वो इश्क़ नही था…” with a hint of tear and pain in his eyes will leave a mark on the viewer’s soul. The patience level in the lovers may increase after feeling the emotions after giving a deep thought to this line and it may enlighten the belief and importance of love in the hearts of love birds. Major Samar Anand in Bomb Defusing Squad of the Indian Army is a man who flirts with death at every step of his life because he is challenging the God which reminded me the epic battle between human and the god from Yashraj’s another classic, “Deewar”. He is more convincing in “Major” part of his character rather than the “Singer” part.
Katrina’s acting may not be at the peak at the moment and you expect more expression since you see lot of other actresses with mind blowing expressions yet you can’t take your eyes of from her dance moves. The dance sequence before Ishq Shava is the biggest proof of her being the best dancer in her generation and earned her the tag “seductress” on social media.
Complicated turn of events that involves Meera who is a rich business woman and who considers Indians brown, boring…learning music from Samar, a street singer and then both fall in love with each other seems bit unusual in movie script but as Joseph L Mankiewicz said, “The difference between life and the movies is that a script has to make sense, and life doesn’t.”; still we expect complete opposite things in reality.
Anushka is just like a chilli sauce which provides movie lovers a super combo having different ingredients. She plays her part with lot of grace and elegance. Akira is not only a modern girl having aspiration of great career at discovery channel but also a sensitive girl who is not afraid to express her love beautifully to Major Samar Anand under the bridge and after the completion of her movie. Her line ”Pyar karta hai mujse? 10 saal wait karega” will be more often used in coming years and that’s the impact romantic love story should have on the audience.
Intimate scenes of SRK and Katrina have been filmed with immense grace and perfect glamour quotient and they don’t look vulgar at all. Chemistry between the trio is appealing. Sarika, Rishi and Neetu have played their part with elegance. I firmly believe that Kiran Kher would have been far better choice in the scene where Neetu Singh (Mother) meets Meera (Daughter) which was exceptionally moving.
The songs ‘Challa’, ‘Ishq Shava’ and ‘Saans Mein’ are a delight to the ears of music lovers; ‘Heer’ is a beautiful song. After watching the movie the lyrics, tunes and background scores get more meaning and viewer can realize why they are perfectly fit for the storyline.

Gulzar Saab’s lyrics are compelling; he has set the context  in the emotional scene with heart touching lines such as:
तुमको देख के यूँ लगता है
कोई बिछड़ा ख्वाब आया है
बरसो लंबी रात से गुज़रे
सुबह का झोंका लौट आया है
The one liner “मेरी तरह महोबबत मत कर बैठना” will inspire generations to have that amount of love and romance in their love-stories.
